How to Eat Right to Prevent Cancer

In 1970, Richard Doll and Richard Peto published a key study regarding nutrition and cancer; their conclusions were that 75-80% of cancers diagnosed in the U.S. may have been prevented by simply altering environmental factors like diet, alcohol consumption, and tobacco usage ((Preventing Cancer. Nature 2006;442, 720.)). However, tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption affect a select population whereas dietary factors affect everyone worldwide. Since 1970, studies have shown that the variations of diet in different […]

Nanotechnology and the New Age of Cancer Treatment

Many of you may be familiar with the standard chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments used for cancer treatment. However, much of the research over the past decade has pointed to the arrival of a new approach to cancer treatment—the use of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is a new branch of science that engineers on the atomic and molecular level to create particles and structures with novel physical and chemical properties ((“Learn About Nanotechnology in Cancer.” (2012). National […]

Characterization of the Purity of Curcumin Extraction: Comparative study of UV Spectrophotometry and HPLC from a Field Application Perspective

Abstract: Turmeric is a popular spice used in South Asia for both culinary and religious purposes.  It has also been used in traditional Indian medicine called Ayurveda.  More recently curcumin has been identified to be the active ingredient in turmeric, and its pharmacological basis has been identified.  This paper examines the extraction, processing and refinement of curcumin with special emphasis on testing and characterization.  This study focuses on the comparison of UV Spectrophotometry and High […]

A Novel Method for Producing Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract: We created silver nanoparticles using silver nitrate and sodium alginate through a method of mixing and heating the two solutions. The nanoparticles were confirmed by spectrographs and electron micrograph investigations. They proved to be very effective inhibiting the growth of E.Coli when embedded in agar. A PDF version of this paper is available here. Introduction: Escherichia Coli (E. Coli) is a bacterial germ that inhabits intestinal tracts of humans and animals. The intestinal tract of […]
